The Bishopsgate Goodsyard
The Bishopsgate Goodsyard, dating from the 1880s, carries the London Overground through old Shoreditch. It is a remnant of an earlier railway, when the East London Railway continued on into Liverpool Street from the south.
In 2003, when the new stretch of the Overground network was being built (and well before it was called London Overground — in those days it was known as the East London Line Extension) there was talk of demolishing the viaduct. There is, apparently, the same talk occurring now.
I was then at journalism school, and wrote about the line, the yard and the demolition of the 1839 Braithwaite viaduct for my final project which you can read as a PDF here. It has nothing to do with the New Statesman — we had to mock up the project to look as though it was part of a real publication.
